open for dicussion "does a graded 9 hurt a modern card?"

i guess sub categories are called for...

    1,common rc
    2,short print rc card
    3,auto card graded 9 with 10 auto [a 9 auto definitely hurts a card]
    4,game used

i will reserve my opinions for now
i realize that people grade for different reasons for the purposes of this discussion you have graded a modern card type above and it came back a 9.
your intent was first to preserve while you like the card it may not be a card that goes in the safe until you die....

    Tony,
While I don't get my cards graded, I do think a 9 for modern will hurt. With the proliferation of grading nowadays, people are having everything graded left and right. And with many of them grading from pack to slab, a 9 will not be considered a very good grade in the future. Just my opinion.

Not sure if I would say it hurts it but I will say a 9 grade on a modern card shouldn't really add any value

At least from what I have seen but I do not spend all day on the Bay or anything

If 1997'98 Ultra basketball counts as modern... I can tell you a card that grades 9 HELPS!!

I used to collect that set and for some reason, rookie cards were a PAIN to keep mint.

Last I looked which was about a year ago...
A Tracy McGrady rookie card booked $20 raw.
Tracy McGrady rookie graded 9 booked $250.

So yeah in some cases bring on the 9s baby

    Tony,

I usually dont go for graded unless its 9.5 or above if its a newer card. Anything older of course a 9 would be a good grade and add extra value. As far as a 9 nowadays hurting the value...in the short term sort of. If your goal is to grade to then sell, then yes it may hurt your sale. If your goal is to grade to protect then no a 9 would not hurt you. The biggest problem is that nowadays machines are more accurate and you get better centered cards when back in the day you could get some horribly centered cards. So most cards will grade a lot higher now, plus when did people start grading cards? Of course the print of the card matters too as a 1/1 or /10 would not hurt the card as it adds value to the buyer because you know the card is legit. If it is a common rookie then I would say it could possibly hurt. A 9 auto would def hurt as 95% or higher of all autos I have seen have graded 10 auto, do they even give out lower than a 9 auto?

    Just my 2 cents
    Stephen

I say it doesn't HELP in any case but #3, only because of the 10 auto. I don't think it hurts any of the cards, and on CONDITION SENSITIVE like chromes or black borders it does actually help.

In the case of the McGrady RC- 96/97 Ultra chipped very easily- condition sensitive 9s like Arod and Jeter SP's you can't get much better from a reputable company.

BGS 9 and PSA 9 I don't think hurt the value..... a BCCG grade of 9 would hurt it. BGS 9 is slightly better than a PSA 9 also on modern .... a PSA 9 could very slighly hurt on real new stuff. I'd be happier with a BGS 9 versus a PSA 9 on modern cards. Not a big grader, but I'll buy some EBAY slabs from time to time. A fine nine has never bothered me

for the few that believe a 9 hurts a modern card lets consider a auto rc with a uni swatch
1, there are 8 corners on the thicker cards.
2, how many times have you pulled one and not had the proper size top loader to put it in? what about penny sleeves while you may know the proper technique to get a thicker card in one there are many who dont.
3, card companies seem to have a tough time cutting these resulting in chipped rough edges

considering the above, a 9 is not only acceptable but is probably a rare occasion.

like hands said find me a graded 9.5 or better ud ballpark 2008 thicker card. those cards were chipped up so bad i traded them below bv
