Stamps - does anyone know anything about them?

Long story short...

My dad gave me HEAPS and HEAPS of old stamps.
Apparently he used to collect them when he was a boy.

He just got them back from my nan (his mum)

They are really cool.
Lots of 3 and 4 cents stamps (they cost 45c now)

Heaps from the 1960s, 1970s etc
Mostly Australian stamps but some overseas one too.

I have no clue what to do with them.

Kinda wanting to know what they are worth... if they are worth junk, I am going to keep them cos I'm fascinated.

How do I get them appraised or whatever?

look up philatelist online and see if there's one in your area. i don't know how to tell which ones are worth money, but i know what the hobby is called LOL in addition. just wanted to type the word philatelist and now, thanks to you i've done it twice.

I have the exact same situation. My dad left me his stamp collection. While there are a few that have some value, most are right next door to worthless. Especially canceled ones. So bad that new unused stamps sell for less than face value. there are lots of ballcard sellers that buy lots of unused stamps off the bay at less than face and save a wee bit on shipping there wares. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but tis what it is.

If you have the inverted jenny (upside down biplane) I would gladly take it off your hands. Thats all I know about stamps other than the 1814 1/2 cent stamp pink with george washington that I saw on pawn stars. I would be glad to take that one off your hands as well.
Good luck with them although I know a guy who collects stamps and if you can scan them I will try to get him to come to my office where he can look at them.
