    What would you do?

Let me preface this by saying I'm working on the 1962 Topps set (slowly) and some other PC goals so I do have things to keep me busy this year.

I was looking through my Astros cards and saw a couple of 1985 Topps and for some reason I was drawn to the design. It's simple I know but I really liked it. I was thinking of collecting the full set and here is where my question lies. Should I do a hand collated set which are usually more meaningful and give you a sense of accomplishment? Or should I just buy a complete set like off eBay and such? You can get the set for pretty cheap on the internet and I think it'd be more expensive to buy singles and lots (unless I traded for the majority of them, which is possible since I may get some new trade bait in soon).

I'd just like to hear your opinions.

I built this set because it is my birth year

If you decide to build it let me know as I am pretty sure I still have some dupes

I hate buying sets. I know it's cheaper, but it really takes away most of the point of collecting for me. There's a sense of accomplishment when you actually sort and put the cards together in a set. For myself, I don't see the point in just buying the set. At that point, I'm not collecting so much as just obtaining.

Now, they're right that it will cost more to try to put the set together on your own, but it's definitely doable. You can get a wax box for just a bit more than a brand new hobby box. It looks like you can even get vending boxes for less than $40 before shipping.

I put a 1985 Topps set together from packs a few years back, so I have quite a few extras if you end up going that route.

Of course, now I also have dozens of mostly finished sets waiting to be completed...

I'd say go ahead and buy a complete set, unless you WANT the sense of accomplishment of picking up the cards separately and building the set. If it doesn't matter as much, just buy it completed so it saves money. If you truly want the sense of accomplishment, by all means, build it by hand.

At least you got a nice birth year set to build. My dad built mine when I was born and unlucky for me it was 1987 Topps lol.

Thanks everyone for the advice. As of right now I think I'm going to buy a complete set and focus on my other goals for 2012 instead of adding another one to my plate. However, I might see a good deal on a partial set and just buy that as a starting point. We'll see I guess, either way I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks again to everyone for the help I really do appreciate it. This is why SCA is the best out there.

Yeah... 87 Topps is not the most exciting set to say the least

If I were to put together my birth year, I'd probably do 1989 Upper Deck and get that Griffey RC
