    Prospect Tips

Let's start 2012 with a new thread to help members learn about new rookies and prospects. If you learn of a young up and comer that has potential, let's share their possibilities with the rest of the site and maybe we can help others get some of their cardboard before they go out of sight. Here is my first pick of the season:

Aside from Prince Fielder, one of the biggest things going in the free agent market right now is Cuban defector Yoennis Cespedes. The 26 year old is currently showcasing his talents for Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League. While he is off to a slow start (hitting under .200 thus far in a handful of games), he did this Wednesday night, crushing a home run off former New York Mets prospect & Houston Astros Rule 5 pick Rhiner Cruz. Cespedes baseball cards which went to the moon when they hype train began a few months ago are Starting To Pick Up Steam once again as well.

Keep an eye on 22 year old left hander Matt Moore on the Tampa Bay Rays. He’s always had velocity, with a fastball easily into the mid-90s and perhaps touching higher at times. He maintains it deep into starts, and his fastball has plenty of movement. The biggest advance he’s made has been with his command, particularly of his fastball. His curve is a plus pitch as well, with a hard break. His changeup improved considerably, and that, too, can be a plus pitch at times. As he showed during his big league time, he has off-the-charts mound presence and makeup.

Thanks for the tip, Tim. Checking him out now. Way impressive stats experts say similar but better than Price. Only problem I see is everybody must have got the word, because his cards are already pretty pricey. Look around for bargains on this guy tho.

If you really want to take a chance. Buy low on Jedd Gyorko. He's a 23 year old third baseman on the Padres. He hit a combined .333/.400/.552 between single and double A last year with 25 HR and 114 RBI. His autograph prices are still averaging below $15. He was probably the best hitter in the minor leagues after Paul Goldschmidt got called up to the majors.
